Objectives and competences

Objective

The main objective of the Master’s Degree in General Health Psychology (MPGS) is to offer the training needed to acquire the professional skills which will certify the students who successfully complete these studies as professional General Health Psychologists.

Basic skills

  • BS6 Own and understand knowledge which to provide a base or opportunity for being original in developing and/or applying ideas, often in a research context.
  • BS7 Know how to apply the acquired knowledge and be capable of solving problems in new or little known environments within broader contexts (or cross-disciplinary), related to their field of study.
  • BS8 Be capable of integrating knowledge and facing the complexity of formulating judgements based on incomplete or limited information that includes reflexion on social and ethical responsibilities related to the application of their knowledge and judgements.
  • BS9 Know how to communicate their conclusions and the ultimate knowledge and reasons that support them to specialized and non-specialized audiences in a clear way and without ambiguities.
  • CB10 Own the learning skills that will allow them to continue studying in a way which will have to be mostly self-directed or autonomous.

General skills

  • GS1 Acquire, develop and implement a concept of integral health, where its biopsychosocial components are included, in accordance with the directives established by WHO.
  • GS2 Apply the fundamentals of bioethics and the deliberative method in professional practice, complying, as a health professional, with what is provisioned in Law 44/2003, of 21st November, which regulates the health professions.
  • GS3 Critically analyse and use sources of clinical information.
  • GS4 Use information and communication technologies in professional practice.
  • GS5 Formulate working hypotheses in research and critically collect and value information to solve problems, applying the scientific method.
  • GS6 Develop one’s own work from a perspective of quality and continuous improvement, with the self-critical ability needed for a responsible professional practice.
  • GS7 Know how to communicate to other professionals and master the skills needed to work in a team and in cross-disciplinary groups.
  • GS8 Knowledge of the health staff’s obligations and responsibilities related to information confidentiality and patients’ personal data protection.
  • GS9 Know the activities needed to constitute, implement and manage a business, its different legal forms and the legal, accounting, and tax obligations associated with it.
  • GS10 Knowledge of the current regulation in the Spanish health system.

Specific skills

  • SS1 Show appropriate interpersonal communication and emotion management skills for an effective interaction with patients, relatives and caretakers during the processes of problem identification, evaluation, communication of the diagnosis and psychological intervention and monitoring.
  • SS2 Write appropriate psychological reports for the recipients.
  • SS3 Know the general health psychologist’s action scope and when to refer to the corresponding professional specialist.
  • SS4 Have an in-depth knowledge of the psychological nature of human behaviour, as well as of the social and biological factors that may affect it.
  • SS5 Have an in-depth knowledge of the psychological nature of disorders of human behaviour.
  • SS6 Have an in-depth knowledge of the psychological factors associated with health problems and illness.
  • SS7 Have an in-depth knowledge of the biological and psychosocial factors associated with health problems and illness, especially those related with mental health.
  • SS8 Have an in-depth knowledge of the different models of evaluation and intervention in the field of the General Health Psychology, as well as of the techniques and procedures derived from them to approach behavioural disorders and the psychological factors associated with health problems.
  • SS9 Plan, perform and, when necessary, monitor the process of psychological evaluation of human behaviour and the psychological factors associated with health problems in order to establish the evaluation of these problems.
  • SS10 Design, develop and, when necessary, monitor and evaluate plans and programmes of psychological intervention, according to the psychological evaluation and the concurrent individual and social variables in each case.
  • SS11 Perform promoting and educational activities for individual and community psychological health.
